Nvidia announced a plan to more than double Australia's data centre computing capacity through a partnership with local firms. The initiative involves collaborating with Firmus, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk to build up to 2 gigawatts of artificial intelligence-related capacity by 2027.
Australia's current computing capacity stands at 1.6 gigawatts, according to a report from the lobby group Data Centres Australia citing research from DC Byte analysts. The country is currently pushing to become a global hub for data centre investment.
The expansion aims to support local innovators in developing models and applications while also aiding additional power generation projects. Nvidia stated that the capacity expansion will utilize its DSX platform to support high-performance computing needs.
The infrastructure growth faces calls for stricter regulation regarding environmental impact, heavy energy consumption, and water consumption.
