Leaders of the expanded BRICS bloc concluded a three-day summit in New Delhi on Monday, issuing a joint declaration that addresses global supply chains, financial infrastructure, and regional conflicts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the gatherings under the theme of resilience and innovation, hosting counterparts from nine other member nations alongside ten partner countries.
The summit produced the Delhi Declaration, which emphasizes the need for diversified supply chains for critical raw materials. During the proceedings, Modi cautioned against employing critical minerals and technology as geopolitical levers, a statement that followed recent export curbs on rare metals and advanced technology transfers.
China announced several cooperative frameworks during the meetings, including an open-source artificial intelligence zone, a digital cloud platform, and a special economic zone partnership. Chinese President Xi Jinping's trip to India marked his first visit to the country in seven years, following military border clashes in the Galwan Valley in 2020. The visit included bilateral talks with Modi alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, following a previous gathering of the three leaders at a regional summit in August.
Other member states used the platform to forward specific economic and strategic proposals. Putin introduced a grain market insurance mechanism designed to navigate Western sanctions and price caps, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called for accelerated trade settlements using national currencies. The discussions also touched on geopolitical flashpoints, resulting in a joint statement on the Middle East calling for restraint and dialogue, alongside offers from Asian member states to facilitate peace discussions regarding Ukraine. China is set to assume the rotating chairmanship of the bloc next year.
