Maldon is asking the public to find the "perfect pyramid" flake of sea salt. The contest marks 145 years of the company making sea salt flakes. The prize is a chef's counter dining experience for two at Fallow in London, an overnight stay at Shangri-La The Shard and a bundle of Maldon sea salt. Entries can be posted at maldonsalt.com/perfectpyramid, or shared on Instagram by tagging @maldonsalt with #perfectpyramid.
The contest is one of several food and drink offers and openings in the UK this autumn.
In London, Norma, a Sicilian restaurant in a Georgian townhouse on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia, is hosting "La Grande Festa" through October. The four-course lunch takes in Sicilian bread, antipasti, pasta, main courses and desserts built around chocolate caviar, with wine or cocktail pairings available. The Wolseley City offers all-day dining, a live pianist at weekends, and Sunday roasts with live jazz.
Masala Zone, which serves Indian food at Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Covent Garden, is taking 25% off its "out-of-the-ordinary" dishes for groups of up to eight until November 22. Samosas, butter chicken and rogan josh are excluded. Burger & Beyond, which BurgerDudes ranked the best burger in the UK and fifth best globally, serves rare breed Galician and British dry-aged steaks, along with cocktails and signature sides.
Sushi & Salad Japanese Kitchen opens a new site in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, at the end of October. The menu includes handmade sushi, sashimi, sharing platters and Japanese afternoon tea, and takeaway orders placed through its app get 10% off.
At home, The Real Seafood Company is promoting emperor king prawns, suggesting them for tostadas or a 30-minute curry with ginger, garlic, chilli, tomato, coconut milk and spinach. Lillet Rosé, a French aperitif made from wines and fruit infusions, has notes of red berries, orange blossom and grapefruit. It is suggested over ice with tonic and a grapefruit garnish, and is sold on amazon.co.uk. Cabana Cocktails sells canned drinks made with organic vodka and fruit and vegetable juices, at 7% ABV and 120 calories, with no added sugar or preservatives.
Chantal Coady OBE, founder of Chocolate Detective, launches a Christmas collection in mid-October that includes five festive egg designs. The cartons are made from recycled sugar-cane fibre, and the cocoa comes from a Rainforest Alliance-approved farm in Ecuador. The code FINDMYBIRD15 takes 15% off until December 15.
Among the coffee and tea sellers, Parallel Coffee, a Glasgow roastery, offers Wagner Ferrero from Brazil and El Diviso from Colombia, plus one-on-one training with expert roasters. Delivery is free with the code FREESHIPPING. What-Cha, a family business, sources loose-leaf teas from 20 countries and says it supports fair prices for farmers. The code WELCOME5 gives 5% off.
