Ampol has agreed to buy electric vehicle charging operator Evie Networks, the fuel retailer announced on Thursday. The company plans to acquire 100 per cent of Evie, whose legal entity is Fast Cities Australia Pty Ltd, for $225 million. The deal needs regulatory approval and is expected to complete in the first half of 2027.
Evie operates more than 1030 charging bays. Ampol would fold them into its existing AmpCharge network, creating a combined network of about 1425 bays at more than 400 sites. Ampol says the network would cover every Australian state and territory.
Ampol chief executive Matt Halliday described Evie as a "highly complementary business."
The purchase comes as electric vehicles take a growing share of the Australian market. EV sales reached a record 24.9 per cent of new-vehicle sales in August. The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling new vehicle in May, June and August.
Ampol also pointed to pressure on its traditional business as a reason for shifting toward electrification. It cited rising petrol refining costs and high fuel prices linked to Middle East tensions. The company expects its restructured EV charging business to break even in 2028.
