India will hold the International Tourism Mart in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, from October 27 to November 1. The event is organized by the Union Ministry of Tourism and the Arunachal Pradesh tourism department, and it rotates among the north-eastern states. Mint reports it as the 14th edition, and describes the Arunachal venue as the first there in 13 years.
Tourism businesses, tour operators, investors, media, and government representatives are expected, along with stakeholders from all eight north-eastern states: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim. Delegates from about 20 countries are expected, China among them. Whether Chinese representatives will actually come is unclear. Official confirmations are pending, according to an Indian Express report cited by Mint.
The venue carries political weight. Tawang lies in the eastern sector of the India-China boundary and is central to Beijing's territorial claims. China calls Arunachal Pradesh "Zangnan" or "South Tibet" and claims it. India rejects that claim and holds that the state is an "inalienable and integral part of India."
The stated aim of the event is to promote tourism and build business links, with a focus on the neighboring ASEAN and SAARC regions. Organizers plan to showcase Tawang's 400-year-old monastery, Buddhist heritage, Monpa culture, Himalayan landscape, and eco-tourism. The mart follows India's recent move to officially identify 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh by standard names on Survey of India maps.
Last year's edition was held in Gangtok, Sikkim, from November 13 to 16, with representatives from more than 19 countries.
The mart falls during continuing diplomatic and military-level contact between the two countries. That includes talks between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, aimed at stabilizing relations after years of tension along the Line of Actual Control. Friction there has flared at times, including a reported physical clash in 2022 in the Yangtse area of the Tawang sector.
