India's technology and telecom sectors are being reshaped by semiconductor ambitions and the spread of agentic AI, according to industry executives cited in a report published Thursday.
MediaTek India Managing Director Anku Jain pointed to the rise of AI-enabled devices, citing the company's newly launched Dimensity 9600 Pro chipset, which carries a dual neural processing unit to speed up AI processing directly on devices rather than through the cloud. Jain welcomed the government's India Semiconductor Mission, now in its second phase, calling domestic manufacturing a step that will strengthen the broader ecosystem. He added that reaching advanced semiconductor nodes will take time, since India's current manufacturing focus remains on legacy nodes.
Accenture India Managing Director Berjesh Chawla addressed the telecom side, saying agentic AI could disrupt the industry by making network and IT operations run autonomously. He pointed to sovereign AI as an opportunity for India, allowing data to be processed and stored domestically rather than through foreign systems. Chawla also argued that India should take a role in defining 6G standards so the country isn't left dependent on proprietary technology set by others.
Chawla raised the possibility that telecom base stations could double as sensing centers, performing data-gathering functions alongside their communication role.
The report carried an ANI attribution.
