Restaurant and cafe bills in the Netherlands are set to rise 4.5% in 2027, according to the FoodService Institute Netherlands. FSIN director Patrick Bramer expects a difficult year, though he said consumers have not yet pulled back on spending, even as higher prices have made them more critical of what they pay for.
The figure sits above the broader retail picture. When supermarkets and specialty stores are folded in alongside restaurants and cafes, the overall expected price increase for 2027 drops to 3.5%.
Hospitality operators' confidence has fallen sharply this year. Statistics Netherlands calculates the sector's business confidence index dropped from -12.0 at the start of the first quarter to -30.1 at the start of the second quarter.
Despite that pessimism, the FSIN projects overall hospitality revenue will grow 3.6% next year, building on 2.6% growth this year. Supermarkets and specialty stores are on a similar track, with revenue up 2.9% this year.
In restaurants and cafes specifically, the FSIN attributes all of this year's revenue growth to higher prices rather than more business, since the number of establishments keeps falling.
