Beef prices have risen significantly, and mySA reported Friday that the "big four beef producers" are capturing much of the money while farmers see little of the profit. The outlet's October 10 report presented direct farm purchases as a cheaper alternative, adding four Texas ranches to a previous list of 12.
Young McDonald Farm in Seguin sells grassfed beef cuts ranging from $8.50 a pound for liver steak to $30 a pound for filet. The farm also sells pork, chicken, and jams, available at the New Braunfels Farmers Market and The Gathering Place.
Sovereignty Ranch in Bandera offers delivery or pickup in Bandera, Boerne, Kerrville, and Helotes, or at its San Antonio location at 317 Lexington Ave., Suite 3. The ranch sells a 10-pound grass-fed beef box for $180 and a premium steak box for $95, and runs a dining location called The Barn at 165 Wyatt Ranch Road E. in Bandera.
Schneider Farms in Fredericksburg has sold Brahman beef for more than 50 years, with prices ranging from $2.87 a pound for soup bones to $5,075 for a full steer.
Byrd Beef Co. in Grapeland offers processing services at $1.70 per hanging weight pound and direct sales at $7 per hanging weight pound.
