MediaTek is pushing beyond smartphone chips into data centres, automotive technology, IoT and smart glasses, according to the company's India managing director. Anku Jain discussed the plan with the Economic Times at the India Mobile Congress on Wednesday.
Jain pointed to the company's new Dimensity 9600 Pro chipset, built on a 2nm process, as part of the pitch. The chip carries dual neural processing units designed to support "agentic AI" experiences while managing computing efficiency and battery life.
Jain named data centres, cloud computing, automotive technologies, IoT and smart glasses as the growth sectors MediaTek is targeting outside its mobile processor business. The discussion also raised the question of whether AI-powered wearables could eventually replace smartphones.
Jain's comments also pointed to flagship devices taking on a larger role in MediaTek's portfolio going forward.
