Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his lung. The Vatican said the 90-minute operation was "successfully completed" and that the pontiff "woke up normally" afterward.
Word of the operation first came Tuesday, when the Vatican said doctors had removed a growth from the Pope's lung and that he was expected to spend a week recovering in the hospital. Officials at that point did not say whether the growth was cancerous or disclose how long the surgery had taken.
By Wednesday, the Vatican had confirmed the tumor was cancerous and specified the operation's length as 90 minutes. The week-long recovery estimate stood unchanged.
