Ryanair said Thursday it will invest $200 million in a new aircraft base at Rimini, Italy, set to open for summer 2027. The base will run 114 weekly flights and offer more than 600,000 low-fare seats across 17 routes, with the airline framing the move as a boost to tourism and connectivity in the region.
The investment follows a decision by the Italian region to abolish its municipal tax. Ryanair said that if Italy scraps the tax nationwide, it is prepared to put a further $4 billion into the country.
The Rimini announcement came as Ryanair cuts flights elsewhere in Europe. The airline is reducing its schedule in Germany, where it says costs have become "astronomical." Berlin's international airport is expected to lose about half of Ryanair's flights there. The airline pointed to high taxes and airport fees as the reasons for pulling back in Berlin.
