The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 on Sunday at Ford Field when Jake Bates kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired. The win ended Green Bay's three-game winning streak. Detroit moved to 4-2 with its second straight victory, and the Packers fell to 4-3.
The finish came after a gamble that nearly cost Detroit. With the score tied 17-17 and under five minutes left, Lions coach Dan Campbell went for it on fourth-and-1 deep in his own territory. Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon stopped running back Jahmyr Gibbs short, and Green Bay took over in field-goal range. "I thought we would get it, No. 1," Campbell said. "I knew we would get the ball back if it didn't work out."
He did. Rookie kicker Trey Smack's 35-yard attempt was deflected by Lions defensive end D.J. Wonnum with 3:21 remaining. Smack had already missed a shorter kick earlier in the game, though he also made a 43-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to tie it. According to Sportradar, he is the first kicker since 2019 to miss two field goals of 35 yards or closer in one game.
"We had some premier field position and we just didn't take advantage," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said.
Penalties helped set up Detroit's last drive. A late hit on quarterback Jared Goff by Packers defensive lineman Karl Brooks gave the Lions the ball at the Green Bay 45, and Detroit went 71 yards in 10 plays before Gibbs took a knee at the 3 so Bates could kick on the final snap. The Lions got five first downs by penalty, their most in a game since 2020. Both teams were flagged for calls that drew criticism, including roughing-the-passer penalties on Brooks and Brenton Cox Jr. of Green Bay and an unnecessary-roughness call on Detroit's Derrick Barnes. Fox analyst Tom Brady was among those critical of the officiating.
Goff completed 22 of 32 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jameson Williams. It was the second week in a row Williams caught two touchdown passes. Amon-Ra St. Brown had nine catches for a game-high 153 yards, and Gibbs ran 29 times for 116 yards.
Detroit led 10-7 at halftime. Goff then fumbled early in the third quarter, one of the Lions' two turnovers, and Packers quarterback Jordan Love found Josh Jacobs for a 25-yard touchdown and a 14-10 lead. It was the season debut for Jacobs, who had been on the NFL commissioner's exempt list after an altercation in May. He caught five passes for 55 yards and ran 11 times for 36 yards. Love went 27 of 45 for 274 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Safety Brian Branch made that interception in the fourth quarter. It was his first game since he tore his left Achilles tendon last December.
The Lions are third in the NFC North, behind the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings at 6-0 and the Chicago Bears at 5-2. Green Bay is last. Packers center Sean Rhyan left with an ankle injury and his backup, Jacob Monk, hurt a quad. Lions defensive back Ennis Rakestraw injured an ankle. Green Bay hosts the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, and Detroit hosts Minnesota on Sunday.
