Lauren Bennett, the 36-year-old British singer who featured on LMFAO's 2011 hit "Party Rock Anthem", died by suicide, an inquest concluded on Friday. Assistant coroner Jyoti Gill recorded the conclusion at the Kent and Medway Coroners' Court in Maidstone. Bennett was found dead on May 29 near her home in Meopham, Kent.
She had told her husband, the American actor and reality TV star Kenny Wormald, that she was going for a walk. She left at about 9am. Wormald and her father, Richard Bennett, began searching after midday, and Wormald reportedly used a phone-location feature to find her in a rural, wooded area. Toxicology tests found nothing of note, and police found nothing suspicious.
The inquest heard that Bennett had a mental health crisis in January and had struggled since. She was admitted to Darent Valley Hospital, and later Littlebrook Hospital, on January 16 after going days without sleep, and was discharged on January 23 following an NHS mental health assessment. She was then under the care of what Gill described as special mental health services. She had reacted badly to prescribed medication and had reported distress about it. A doctor noted the day before her death that she was anxious and struggling to sleep. Years earlier, before the family moved from Los Angeles to stay at her father's home in Meopham, she had been diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition.
A statement from Wormald, read to the inquest by an assistant coroner, said she had been suffering from severe mental health issues before her death. Her brother, step-brother and sister-in-law attended. The family later issued a statement expressing "deep disappointment" that medical professionals and NHS services did not treat her appropriately when she most needed it. Wormald and Bennett married in 2019 and have a daughter.
Her father paid tribute to what he called an "amazing life", pointing to her music and her daughter as her legacy. He said she signed a record deal at 17 and moved to the United States alone.
Bennett first came to attention as a teenager on The X Factor, then moved to Los Angeles as part of Paradiso Girls, whose 2009 single "Patron Tequila" reached No. 3 on the US Dance Club Songs chart. She went on to work with LMFAO and GoonRock, with chart-topping results in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Ireland, and performed with CeeLo Green and will.i.am. "Party Rock Anthem" spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Billboard later named it the fifth most successful song of all time.
She joined the group G.R.L. in 2014. Its single "Ugly Heart" reached the UK Top 20 before the group disbanded in 2015. On July 6, G.R.L. announced her death on Instagram, writing that her "beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and she will be deeply missed and forever loved."
