Seven people were shot, one fatally, at a Spirit Halloween store inside the Solano Town Center mall in Fairfield, California, on Friday evening, the night before Halloween. Fairfield police said six people were wounded, and at least three of them were in critical condition. Police have not identified a suspect.
The shooting happened at about 8:30 p.m. Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said one person died at the scene. The six wounded were hospitalized. Fairfield is about 47 miles northeast of San Francisco. The store had been crowded with Halloween shoppers, and police vehicles with flashing lights and crime scene tape were at the scene afterward.
At 11:40 p.m. Friday, police described the scene as "still very active," and Marshall used the words "very active" in comments to reporters. Detectives were at the scene speaking with witnesses and working to identify the suspect. Police were also reviewing surveillance footage. The FBI's Sacramento evidence response team was sent to assist. Accounts differ on whether police are looking for one suspect or have no description at all. Police have not released the names of the victims.
David Bernal, a Fairfield resident whose wife was inside the store, said he heard at least five shots. No lockdown was in effect outside the mall.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of this heartbreaking incident," the Fairfield Police Department said.
The mall, which has 130 stores and restaurants, stayed open on Saturday. It canceled the trick-or-treating event it had planned for that day.
