A Learjet 60 carrying nine people crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday. The FAA and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said everyone on board died. The crash happened just before 1 p.m. local time. Duffy called it a "horrific tragedy."
The jet had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. Video shows the aircraft nose-diving from the sky and erupting in a large fireball. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, speaking from the scene, called the event "cataclysmic" and said the plane "looked like a missile going down." One report says it fell 34,000 feet.
Accounts of where it came down differ. It was in the Cresthaven area, near Military Trail, with locations given as Cresthaven Boulevard or 10th Avenue North. One report says the jet struck a tree and power lines before hitting a mobile home in Greenacres. Another says the crash left a crater in the pavement, with the explosion inches from passing vehicles and feet from homes. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office closed Military Trail in both directions until further notice, and a worker near the site said power was out for about two hours.
DeSantis said there appeared to be no casualties on the ground. Reports say it is unclear how many people were in the mobile home when the plane hit. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue described the scene as a "mass casualty incident."
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, and Federal Aviation Administration staff are deploying to support it. No cause has been released. Cockpit recordings obtained by LiveATC.net, as reported by Al Jazeera, capture the pilot describing ice issues as "manageable" before the crew panicked as the plane lost altitude rapidly. A crew member can be heard saying, "We're going to crash into the ground." Authorities have not identified the people on board.
