Film director Michael Mann, 83, accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles shooting range on Saturday afternoon. His representatives said the injury was minor, that he was treated at a hospital and that he was being released.
The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. at The Range LA, a members-only shooting club on the city's Westside. TMZ was first to report it. Paramedics took Mann to the hospital. His representatives described the wound to Variety as "subcutaneous and minor" and told Page Six it was "superficial."
Accounts differ on how the gun went off. Mann's publicist told ABC News that "a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered." Sources cited by TMZ, and the LAPD as relayed by other outlets, say it fired while he was trying to holster it.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded, along with the fire department. Police classified the incident as a training accident and determined the shooting was accidental. Law enforcement sources said Mann had no intention of harming himself, and he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. One report says the LAPD is conducting a standard review of the discharge and that no criminal charges are expected.
Mann's representative and insiders describe him as an experienced target shooter with decades of practice. Born in Chicago in 1943, he began his career in the 1960s and went on to direct Heat (1995), The Insider (1999), Collateral (2004) and Ferrari (2023).
