Vivienne, the 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, is now legally Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge approved the change on Monday, removing "Pitt" from the name she had carried as Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt. Court documents reviewed by Entertainment Weekly show no one filed an objection, and she gave "personal" as her reason on the form.
She filed the petition in July, shortly after turning 18. One account puts the filing at July 21, nine days after her birthday. California requires public notice of a name change, and a notice ran in the Los Angeles Daily Journal for four consecutive weeks, from July 24 to August 14. Vivienne had already dropped "Pitt" professionally in 2024, when she was a producer on the Broadway musical The Outsiders.
Most accounts count her as the fourth of the couple's six children to drop the surname. Shiloh, now 20, was first, changing hers in 2024 after turning 18. Maddox and Zahara, who is 21, followed earlier this year; reports differ on whether the courts approved those changes in July or September. Zahara's legal name is now Zahara Marley Jolie and Maddox's is Maddox Chivan Jolie. Vivienne's twin brother Knox used "Knox Jolie" at his June high school graduation, though reports disagree on whether he has petitioned a court. Pax is described as continuing to use Jolie-Pitt.
The family's break with Pitt dates to 2016. Jolie filed for divorce that September, after an alleged incident on a private plane in which Pitt is said to have lunged at a child and frightened the family. Jolie alleged physical violence against her and the children. Pitt was investigated over the incident and not charged. A representative for Pitt denied the claims and called the situation "frustrating." The divorce was finalized in December 2024, ending an eight-year case that included years of disputes over custody and finances.
Pax, in a 2023 post on a private Instagram account, called his father a "world class asshole" and a "f***ing awful human being" and said he made people "tremble in fear." In September, a source told People there is very little communication between Pitt and his six children, calling the situation a "tragedy." Pitt is 62.
Jolie, 51, told L'Officiel she plans to be "a bit nomadic" and to spend more time outside the United States. Her creative company, Atelier Jolie, is reportedly considering its first location outside the country, in Brazil.
