The Philadelphia 76ers beat the Chicago Bulls 126-107 on Monday at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, improving their record to 7-1. The game also produced a video that spread widely online: LeBron James, the 41-year-old four-time MVP, stepped into the crowd during the third quarter, bumped a fan, spilled the fan's drink and then took a sip of it.
James finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists in 31 minutes, shooting 6-for-13 from the field. Nine of his points came in the third quarter, the same stretch in which the collision happened. Yahoo Sports and Sportsnet both tie it to a missed pass from teammate Tyrese Maxey.
Accounts of the contact differ. Yahoo Sports says James ran into the stands and collided with the fan. Sportsnet says he stumbled into the crowd after Maxey's pass, and the fan told it that James bumped into him. TMZ describes James running behind the basket and grabbing the fan to steady himself. All agree that the fan's drink spilled, that James apologized, and that he then handed the cup back and returned to the game. Yahoo Sports, TMZ and Fox News say he took a sip, and TMZ adds that he sniffed the cup first. Sportsnet says he appeared to drink from it.
ESPN's Kris Rhim confirmed that the drink was wine, and TMZ and Fox News specify red. The fan is Troy Clemons, whose name TMZ spells Clemens. He told ESPN he threw the cup in the trash and got a fresh drink. He told Sportsnet, "I'm just glad for him to be here... I threw that cup in the trash." He told Fox News, "At the end of the day, he's another man like me." TMZ quotes him as saying James is "just a man like any other."
Many fans found the moment funny. Barstool Sports' Dave Portnoy did not. "If anybody else did this, they'd be checked into AA, but because it's Bron Bron, SportsCenter will do an hour special on it," he said.
The 76ers have a day off before playing the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.
