Travelers are projected to spend $51.1 billion attending spectator events in 2025, according to the Sports Events and Tourism Association. Joe Esposito, chief commercial officer at Delta Air Lines, described consumer demand in this sector as insatiable.
Airlines are responding to this demand by adding specific routes for major games. United Airlines is launching nonstop flights for specific matchups, including Indianapolis to Lincoln for the Indiana and Nebraska game, Eugene to Columbus for Oregon and Ohio State, and a route between Birmingham and Baton Rouge for the Alabama and LSU game. Southwest Airlines is adding flights for Oklahoma State versus Florida and Ohio State versus Nebraska.
International fixtures are also drawing specialized carrier support. American Airlines will operate a special Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight from Dallas to Rio de Janeiro for the Dallas Cowboys' National Football League game in Brazil.
Local hospitality markets feel the direct impact of these gatherings. In Austin, sports travel accounts for one out of every six hotel room nights.
Wendy Zajack, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, noted the nature of these gatherings as time-bound events. The calendar ahead includes the National Football League's 2026 tour and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
