Skyscanner's "Travel Trends 2027" report, released Friday, puts Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, at the top of its list of destinations seeing the sharpest rise in interest from Indian travelers for next year. Flight searches to the city are up 748% year-on-year, ahead of Rupsi in Assam (up 502%) and Okinawa, Japan (up 279%).
News18 describes the report's data as drawn from Skyscanner's proprietary search data combined with a survey of 2,000 Indian respondents; The Indian Express attributes the findings to a OnePoll survey commissioned by Skyscanner among the same 2,000 respondents, conducted in July. Both pin the travel-abroad finding at 58%, though News18 frames it as 58% of Indian travelers planning to go abroad more often in 2027, while the Indian Express applies the figure to Indians more broadly. The report also found 67% of respondents willing to switch destinations for better value, and 87% expressing confidence in using AI to plan their holidays.
Beyond the destination rankings, the report groups emerging travel behavior into seven named trends. "Gym-cations" reflects fitness-focused travel, with 91% of those surveyed seeking nutritional, performance-oriented breakfasts and 53% prioritizing access to fitness facilities. "Sound Bound" covers music-driven trips, including 43% drawn to carnival experiences and 38% seeking out unusual venues for concerts. "Signal Severance" tracks digital-detox travel: 75% said disconnecting from phones made them feel more connected to nature, and 73% said it deepened their connection to themselves.
"Currency Chasers" describes value-conscious planning, with 69% weighing the rupee's strength against other currencies and 77% of Gen Z respondents adjusting travel plans accordingly. "Pilgra-merch" refers to shopping-motivated travel, with 80% of all respondents and 82% of millennials saying they visit specific locations to buy items available only there. "Sten Do Surge" points to a rise in joint pre-wedding celebrations, preferred by 73% of respondents, while "Grand Odysseys" covers travel inspired by history or mythology, cited by 89%.
The Indian Express's broader top-10 list, ranked on the same year-on-year search growth, also includes Malvan in Maharashtra, Tirana in Albania, Podgorica in Montenegro, Sandakan in Malaysia, Pokhara in Nepal, and Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei.
Neel Ghose, a travel trends and destinations expert at Skyscanner India, said Central Asia is likely to draw more Indian travelers given the rising search interest in Bishkek alongside lower airfares into Tashkent, Uzbekistan. "Indian travellers are entering 2027 with a stronger appetite to explore, but they are also becoming more considered about how they spend their time and money," Ghose said. He advised that Wednesday is typically the cheapest day to book flights, and recommended Skyscanner's "Price Alerts" and "Explore Everywhere" tools for finding deals.
