Vacationers are increasingly booking trips without knowing where they're going until after they've paid, a practice known as mystery travel. The trend has grown in popularity as travelers look for cheaper, lower-effort alternatives to planning a trip themselves.
Groupon is among the companies selling surprise getaway packages, with prices starting at $199 per person. Those packages typically bundle airfare and a hotel stay, with the destination withheld until after purchase. Many mystery-trip sellers ask travelers to submit preferences, such as climate or region, beforehand, and reveal the specific destination shortly before departure.
The appeal has sharpened as standard airfare has climbed. Average airfare hit $405 in late September, about $100 higher than the same point last year.
"It can add a little magic back into travel planning," said Katy Nastro of Flighty.
Travel experts caution that mystery trips aren't necessarily the cheapest way to fly. Travelers focused purely on getting the lowest possible price are often better off researching routes and fares themselves rather than paying for a packaged surprise.
