Global air passenger traffic fell 0.8 percent in August compared with a year earlier, the International Air Transport Association reported, reversing the marginal growth the industry posted in July. The decline came even though airlines added capacity, with available seats up 0.3 percent, pushing the industry's passenger load factor down 0.9 percentage points to 85.1 percent.
The weakness was not evenly spread. Middle Eastern carriers took the sharpest hit, with passenger traffic down 14.6 percent year-on-year and their load factor slipping to 78.9 percent. North American airlines recorded a 2.2 percent decline, their fourth straight month of contraction. IATA attributed the overall drop to softening demand in major markets.
Other regions kept growing. Latin American and Caribbean carriers led with a 5.3 percent rise in passenger traffic. African airlines grew 4.4 percent, though their load factor fell to 77.5 percent as capacity expanded 7.2 percent, outpacing demand. Asian carriers were up 1.4 percent and European airlines rose 0.7 percent.
Despite the August pullback, global passenger traffic remains positive for the year, up 0.4 percent through the first eight months. IATA projected global scheduled seat capacity to grow 1.6 percent in September and 2.0 percent in October.
